One of SA’s biggest annual comedy festivals, the Soweto Comedy Festival is finally touring Southern Africa. The tour started in April with a sold out production at Botswana’s Maitisong theatre (Gaborone) with some of South Africas finest comedy gems. The renowned festival is now heading to the capital of Lesotho, Maseru with a lineup boasting some of the funniest and most energetic comedians we are yet to produce, this tour promises to give audiences in the Southern parts of Africa a true taste of what it is like to be a Sowetan through humour.
Speaking to the festivals founder and comedian Kedibone Mulaudzi about this tour he told us “our mission as a company has always been to grow South African standup comedy through introducing new comedians into the industry through mentorship programs and also introducing more audience members to comedy as a form of entertainment. We have concurred Johannesburg and SA by hosting one of the biggest and longest running comedy festivals in the country for 9 years now & we figured before we hit the big decade it is time to introduce the rest of Africa and eventually the rest of the world to proudly South African humour”.
So whether you’re a typical Kasi fellow, a model C Coconut or uMagwarana, there’s a bit of something for each audience member to relate to & this is guaranteed by the versatility of our talented lineup of comedians. The likes of Chris Mapane who’s shot to fame came when he made it to the final round of So you think you’re funny, a national comedy talent search reality show in South Africa. Internationally acclaimed Thenjiwe Moseley who has over a short space of time garnered a huge global following with her funny skits, Kedibone Mulaudzi who started the Soweto Comedy festival and is one SA’s top comics having performed for all three of our official state presidents, young comedian and writer Philip Dikotla, Comedy Society’s Thapelo “King Flat” Mametja and Lesotho based comedian Lelapha-Lapha who says that “he is looking forward to sharing a stage with comedians that come from a bigger & more advanced industry & is looking forward to learning from them”.
The festival was founded in 2005 at the Backroom in Orlando, Soweto and is the longest running comedy festival in Soweto. It has since grown in leaps and bounds having being graced by some of South Africas biggest comedy exports Trevor Noah and other great talents such as Eugene Khoza, Roni Modimola, Joe Parker, Jay Boogie, Kedibone Mulaudzi & more.
